Brentford 3-1 Burnley: Igor Thiago scores two more goals as Keith Andrews' Bees climb to eighth in Premier League table

Igor Thiago made Brentford history with his double in the Bees' 3-1 win over Burnley.

The Brazilian's penalty after 81 minutes took him to 10 Premier League goals for the season, a milestone he reached in just 13 games. Ivan Toney held the previous club record for a single season, having reached double figures in 15 games in the division in 2022/23.

He added another within five minutes, after Zian Flemming's spot-kick had levelled proceedings, before Dango Ouattara added the gloss for Brentford in the 92nd minute.

Brentford's third straight home win lifts them to eighth in the table, while Burnley stay in the bottom three after their eighth defeat in their last 11 league games.

The first half passed without major incident in west London.

Nathan Collins had a glorious chance to capitalise on a bright Brentford start when he made a darting run to meet a corner from the right, but the contact was minimal and Burnley escaped unscathed.

The Clarets, meanwhile, had their best chance just before the break, when Caoimhin Kelleher showed alertness and athleticism to tip a speculative Flemming shot away.

But for Ouattara straying offside in the build-up Thiago would have had his first shortly after the restart, when he smashed high into the net. He only had to wait half-an-hour more, though.

Axel Tuanzebe brought Ouattara down in the box and, after a VAR check to confirm the contact and also that Thiago was not offside in the build-up a penalty was awarded, which Thiago duly rolled home.

Within seconds, though, Michael Kayode was penalised for a foul on Jaidon Anthony, and Flemming levelled up from the spot at the other end.

The late drama continued when Rico Henry attacked a cross and the ball dropped kindly for Thiago to rattle another high into the net - and Ouattara added the gloss in the third of nine added minutes when he controlled a sublime ball from Jordan Henderson and finished from a similar position.

Brentford head coach Keith Andrews:

"We're very respectful of the opposition, and the performances they've had so far this season, and the timing of when the opposition have maybe carved out the eventual win or draw.

"I think their performances probably haven't given them the points that they deserve, because it's a ruthless division.

"We framed it all week around the type of game I felt it might be. Sometimes it doesn't materialise in exactly that way, but I've got a lot of respect for the way they set up and Scott Parker as a coach, so I knew it was going to be very, very difficult and I think that's a message I would give around today.

"When the big boys come to town, I think there's a natural energy within the stadium and fans, players feed off that.

"Today was always going to be a really, really good test for us and one we would have to earn the right to win and eventually I think we did that."

Burnley head coach Scott Parker:

"Huge frustration. Frustration, hurting. My summary of the game, really, is we knew how difficult this fixture would be and they've got some big results against big, big teams here - Liverpool, United, Villa, Newcastle - so we knew the challenge ahead of us.

"We can accept losses in this division, you can accept losing certain matches, but I think the frustration and hurt comes with just in final stages.

"It's a young, young squad and there's a famous saying that you're probably at your weakest when you score. In those moments, we're taking hammer blows. We're not even taking a little jab, we're taking absolutely knockout punches."
